It’s all over folks, and I have to say that I’m feeling pretty satisfied. Walt got his revenge on Uncle Frank and his Neo-Nazi buddies, Jesse killed Todd, Walt used the Ricin on Lydia, Skylar and Flynn are going to get the money (probably), Jesse got off completely free, and the last shot was of Walt dying. If I was to be disappointed (which I’m not), it would be because I wasn’t ever really surprised. Sure, I hadn’t had all of the details mapped out, but the broad strokes of this finale weren’t things that took me off guard. There really wasn’t any other way for this show to end except for Walt to die. His cancer had finally caught up with him, and he would never be able to move to Argentina and live happily ever after on the beach. That part was a foregone conclusion. And I’m mostly happy with Jesse getting away. I was in the minority of people in thinking that Jesse deserved to get punished just as much as Walt, but I think he’s had his fair share in the past couple of episodes. Hopefully he’s the one that runs away to Argentina.
And I have to say, I love it when shows end with some things up in the air. If we had gotten all of the answers, there would be no reason to continue talking about the show, no reason to analyze small bits of evidence and throw conspiracy theories back and forth with your friends. And that’s what made Breaking Bad so good in the first place.
That’s all I really have to say about this one because I literally just watched it. If you’ve been a fan of the show since the very beginning, as I have been, there’s really no reason to feel disappointed. Breaking Bad went out on a high note with an amazingly strong final season, it answered a lot of our questions but still managed to leave things to think about, and, most importantly, the show ended when and where the creators wanted it to. Not very many shows get to say the same thing (I’m looking at you, “The Office” and “Dexter”).
A lot of people hail Breaking Bad as the best show of all time, and while I think it’s way too early to make that decision on the whole, I can say that, personally, Breaking Bad is the show that has made waiting a week in between episodes the hardest. Now that’s all over, and it’s a sad thing. But it’s also kind of a relief. And I have to imagine that’s what Walt was feeling in his final moments, as he stood in the one place where he felt like he could accomplish something truly great, his meth lab. I’d like to think that he felt a sense of relief as well. Bitch.
