Game of the Year 2020

Game of the Year 2020 - Shea Hates Everything

Ok, so this post is about the best games I played in 2020 and it’s going live well into 2024. You may be thinking, “Who cares about 2020 games anymore? I’m just looking ahead, babyyyyy!” And after the shit show that the past few years has been, I don’t blame you. But I miss writing about video games and this seemed like the best place to start.

And don’t worry, you’ll get a post about my favorite games from 2021, 2022, and 2023 as well. Hopefully before it’s 2025…

But for now, here’s a list of every 2020 game I played and where I played it:

Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Nintendo Switch)
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla (PlayStation 5)
Astro’s Playroom (PlayStation 5)
Bugsnax (Xbox Series X)
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War (PlayStation 5)
Carrion (Xbox Series X)
Cloudpunk (PlayStation 4)
Cyberpunk 2077 (PlayStation 4)
DOOM Eternal (PlayStation 4)
Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout (PlayStation 4)
Final Fantasy VII Remake (PlayStation 4)
Ghost of Tsushima (PlayStation 4)
Godfall (PlayStation 5)
Haven (PlayStation 5)
Immortals: Fenyx Rising (PlayStation 5)
Kentucky Route Zero (PlayStation 4)**
Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning (PlayStation 4)**
Maneater (PlayStation 4)
Marvel’s Avengers (Xbox Series X)
Minecraft Dungeons (Xbox Series X)
Spider-Man: Miles Morales (PlayStation 5)
Spiritfarer (PlayStation 4)
Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated (PlayStation 4)**
Star Wars Squadrons (PlayStation 4)
Super Mario 3D All Stars (Nintendo Switch)**
Tell Me Why (Xbox Series X)
The Last Campfire (PlayStation 4)
The Last of Us Part II (PlayStation 4)
The Pathless (PlayStation 4)
The Pedestrian (Xbox Series X)
Untitled Goose Game (Nintendo Switch)
Void Bastards (PlayStation 4)**
Watch Dogs Legion (PlayStation 4)

** Denotes an HD remaster or a game that was originally released in a previous year on a different platform, but that I waited to play until this year on this platform. For example, Void Bastards released in 2019 on Xbox and PC, but I didn’t play it until this year when it was released on PS4. These games are still eligible for all awards because hey, it’s my list so I can do what I want!

Another note: Hades rules but I played the 1.0 version that launched on PS4 in 2021, so you’ll have to check out that post to see how it stacks up…

As with previous years, I’ll be breaking games down in a variety of categories. But this year, I’m adding “Best Gameplay” as a way to celebrate this broad – and pretty important – aspect of the medium. Here’s the full list of categories:

Best Looking Game
Best Setting
Best Music
Best Characters
Best Story
Best Gameplay
Most Disappointing Game
Game of the Year

For all categories except Game of the Year, I’ll have a ranked list of five plus as many honorable mentions as deserve to be mentioned. Game of the Year will be a ranked list of 10 with some honorable mentions. (For the record, all honorable mentions will be listed in alphabetical order, not ranked order.)

Given the nature of this post, there will be mild spoilers throughout. Let’s get started on the next page with Best Looking Game!
