40. Lapras
Lapras earns extra points for being very rare in the game. It can only be obtained as a gift while exploring Silph Co. It’s a strong Water type that’s perfect for surfing and fishing in the open ocean, and is clearly inspired by the Loch Ness Monster.

39. Rapidash
Rapidash is a beautifully designed Pokemon, but isn’t really worth a look in the game. It basically doesn’t learn any good fire moves naturally, which takes away part of the point. I do love the perfect name, though.

38. Ditto
Ditto is such an odd little guy. The theory behind him in game is strong, with the ability to transform into the Pokemon that it’s fighting. In practice, it’s not a great ability, unfortunately. But it’s adorable in a weird way, and the name is a great, subtle pun.

37. Cubone
Cubone is a fan favorite, adorable Pokemon. The fact that he wears his mother’s skull is completely heartbreaking, but he has a pretty badass attitude. He has actually one of my very favorite designs of any Pokemon.

36. Marowak
I gave Marowak the slight edge over Cubone because it is more powerful, after all. I still love the design, but I prefer Cubone’s mixture of cute and hardcore. Bone Club and Bonemerang are really cool, unique moves, too.

35. Ninetails
Similar to Rapidash, Ninetails is a beautiful Fire type that I wouldn’t recommend using unless you’re looking to try something different. Ninetails makes its most badass appearance in the anime as one of gym leader Blaine’s Pokemon.

34. Poliwrath
Poliwrath is a bit of a surprise this high on the list, because I for one have never used it in game. It does have a great look, as it keeps the boxing gloves hands from Poliwhirl but loses the dumbfounded appearance.

33. Charmander
Charmander is definitely one of my very favorite Pokemon, and I know that I’m not alone in that opinion. He’s super adorable, but actually packs a pretty decent punch for a first evolution. And the episode in the anime when Ash gets him is a total tear jerker.

32. Onix
Onix definitely doesn’t make it onto this list because of his prowess in the video games. He’s an average at best Rock type, though he does have a lot of HP. However, the rock snake design is awesome, and his name matches perfectly.

31. Aerodactyl
Aerodactyl is freaking cool as hell. The name makes sense considering he’s an extinct, Rock type flyer, and there’s a definite gargoyle vibe going on. His trading card and impact in the show aren’t outstanding, which keeps him from the elite category of Pokemon.
