A Scientific Ranking of the Original 151 Pokemon

20. Flareon
1-flareon

To me, Flareon has the cutest design of the Eevee evolutions. His fur looks appropriately like fire and his name is obviously fitting. He isn’t the strongest Fire type, and is probably the weakest Eevee evolution, all things considered.

19. Rhydon
1-rhydon

Rhydon is a Pokemon that I always under-valued. His pre-evolution, Rhyhorn, was a difficult Pokemon to catch in the Safari Zone, and he doesn’t evolve until late in the game. But if you’re patient, you get a very strong Ground type that also has an awesome look.

18. Cloyster
1-cloyster

I might be in the minority on this, but I love Cloyster’s design. It’s a shell that looks like it could kill you without even trying. The name is a bit weird, but I dig it. He’s also an awesome Water type option that can learn the best Ice moves, as well.

17. Geodude
1-geodude
If this list was just about usability in the games, Geodude would be nowhere near this high. But, it’s an all encompassing list, so Geodude’s superior design and name compared to his evolutions skyrockets him to the top 20.

Video Game – 7
Trading Card – 2
TV Show – 5
X Factor – 10
Total – 42

16. Hitmonchan
1-hitmonchan

Hitmonchan’s rarity helps her get higher on the list, but I definitely don’t like her as much as Hitmonlee. She learns the different types of punch moves like Ice and Fire Punch, which is cool, but since her Special Attack is so low, they aren’t as awesome as they could be.

15. Gengar
1-gengar

Gengar is one of the first Pokemon you see in the games, due to his inclusion in the opening cutscene. He’s a trickster Pokemon, which helps lessen the scariness of his Ghost type. He’s only available through trading a Haunter, so most people will have trouble getting one.

14. Articuno
1-articuno

Articuno is the most regal looking of the three legendary birds. The light blue color goes well with the bird design and Ice type, and the name feels less on the nose than Zapdos’. Ice is a rare type in the games, but it’s a good one.

13. Pikachu
1-pikachu

Pikachu is easily the most well known Pokemon there is, which is really the biggest reason that it lands so high on this list. She’s obviously the star of the tv show, too. In the games, on the other hand, she’s a merely average Electric type.

12. Arcanine
1-arcanine

Arcanine is a great all around Pokemon. It has a cool design that makes it look like a wild fire dog, the name sounds badass when you say it out loud, the trading card is really strong and rare, and it surprisingly shows up several times in the anime.

11. Scyther
1-scyther

Scyther is my personal favorite Pokemon, ignoring the obvious choices. The Bug type is admittedly not great, and its inability to learn Fly makes no sense considering it has four wings, but he’s just so cool looking! I always make it a priority to pick one up in the Safari Zone.
