A Scientific Ranking of the Original 151 Pokemon

140. Seel
1-seel

Seel is kind of cute, and kind of dumb looking. There’s a common trend in some of the more lazy Pokemon designs of just taking an animal and adding a horn to it. However, Seel is a later game find and Ice type is pretty neat.

139. Omanyte
1-omanyte

I wonder if there’s been a single person that picked Omanyte’s fossil on purpose over Kabuto. Not only does it look like someone added googly eyes to a snail, but its evolution is hardly any better.

138. Kabuto
1-kabuto

Kabuto isn’t much cooler looking than Omanyte, but I gave it the slight edge for having a much better evolution. It also has those inset red eye things that are pretty rad, and I like the name.

137. Electrode
1-electrode

Electrode isn’t a terrible Pokemon to have, but it lands so low on this list due to the design. It’s just a pokeball turned upside down. It doesn’t get much lazier than that. It’s also super annoying to fight in the game’s power plant thanks to Self-Destruct.

136. Doduo
1-doduo

Doduo is another Pokemon that suffers from just having a weak Normal type. It does learn flying moves as well, but it just isn’t that strong. On the other side of the coin, it does learn Tri-Attack, which can be useful, and I’m a fan of the two headed ostrich look.

135. Nidorina
1-nidorina

Nidorina isn’t much of an improvement over the Female Nidoran from which it evolves. The move set isn’t that great, nor is its Poison type. It did earn a few points thanks to its multiple appearances in the tv show.

134. Kakuna
1-kakuna

Good luck if you catch a Kakuna in the wild, as it’ll only come equipped with Harden, a non-offensive move. Thankfully if you let it evolve from Weedle, it’ll still have its original moves. Unfortunately, that still just includes the under-powered Poison Sting.

133. Grimer
1-grimer

Grimer is just an ugly Pokemon, there’s no getting around it. That’s obviously by design, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s literally a pile of sludge. The name fits, at least, and it’s really good at poising other Pokemon.

132. Metapod
1-metapod

Metapod suffers from the same problems as Kakuna, but I like the name more and it was heavily featured in that classic Metapod vs Metapod scene in the anime. It also has that nice frowny face.

131. Oddish
1-oddish

Oddish may just be some kind of raddish or beet Pokemon, but he’s pretty darn cute. He’s a weak Grass/Poison type, and evolves into two much stronger versions. That’s why he’s so low here.
