A Scientific Ranking of the Original 151 Pokemon

120. Pidgey
1-pidgey

The most common Pokemon in the game, Pidgey is a great early addition to your roster. It learns some neat early Flying moves, but isn’t that great until it starts to evolve. Even then, there are better Flying options out there. Special props for being one of the more recognizable Pokemon, though.

119. Omastar
1-omastar

Omastar really only makes it this high because of its rarity, because the design is appalling. What the hell is going on with its eyes and that awful looking beak? A combo Rock/Water type is cool in theory, but this guy isn’t a great execution of the potential.

118. Spearow
1-spearow

An early game alternate to Pidgey, Spearow scores higher for its badass name and more aggressive design. I think Pidgey is the better Pokemon to have on your team, though, due in large part to its stronger evolutions.

117. Koffing
1-koffing

Koffing is hilarious. It’s a poison cloud that can kill you with a breath, but it’s got a huge smile on its face! It’s another Pokemon often used by James from Team Rocket, but don’t use him as an example. Koffing is not a good Pokemon.

116. Dodrio
1-dodrio

Dodrio should be a better Pokemon, because the design is actually pretty cool. The impact is lessened because Doduo comes before it, and the name is also derivative and unoriginal. Tri-Attack is its only cool move.

115. Gloom
1-gloom

I don’t know why Gloom looks the way it looks, because both its pre and post-evolutions are cute. Gloom is most definitely not cute. I can only imagine how poisonous that little bit of drool is.

114. Abra
1-abra

In the games, Abra is damn near useless since it only starts with the move Teleport. That also makes it unnecessarily hard to catch since it can teleport out of battle with its first move, unless you disable it. That said, it’s a cool Psychic design and evolves into way more powerful versions.

113. Caterpie
1-caterpie

It’s kind of surprising that Caterpie was able to make it this high up, considering how weak it is as a Pokemon. While Weedle gets Poison Sting, Caterpie only has Tackle, which isn’t much better. But for being a caterpillar, he’s a pretty cute one.

112. Shellder
1-shellder

I’ve always been a fan of Shellder. He isn’t the most powerful Water type, but he does organically learn some Ice moves, which is super useful. His little tongue is also adorable, though the bright purple is a weird choice for a shell color.

111. Wigglytuff
1-wigglytuff

Like Clefable, I’ve always irrationally hated Wigglytuff. I think part of it is that Jigglypuff is so awesome, you almost forget at times that she even has an evolution. Still, with moves like Sing, Wigglytuff can be pretty useful in game.
