A Scientific Ranking of the Original 151 Pokemon

150. Female Nidoran
1-female-nidoran

One of the more boring designs from the original 151. It was an interesting idea to have different male and female versions, but this would have been better served with more usable Pokemon.

149. Male Nidoran
1-male-nidraon

I gave the slight edge to Male Nidoran over Female, purely because of the cool horn on his head and more aggressive look. Poison type is still really weak, and Nirodan is only the first of three evolutions.

148. Jynx
1-jynx

This is easily the absolute worst of the original Pokemon designs. I can’t tell if it’s meant to mock blackface or cross-dressing or both, but it’s terrible either way. Ice/Psychic type could have been so cool, too.

147. Exeggutor
1-exeggutor

Another horrifying design, Exeggutor’s look is vastly improved in the new Sun/Moon game. I’m not really sure what’s supposed to be going on in this design, as it upgraded from eggs to coconuts. And the name is even worse than Exeggcute.

146. Goldeen
1-goldeen

Whenever I think of Goldeen, I think of the disappointment of discovering one in a pokeball during Super Smash Bros. It’s a weak Water type, and it’s basically just a bored looking goldfish. Not exactly inspired.

145. Weedle
1-weedle

Weedle is far more annoying to fight against than it is to have in your party thanks to Poison Sting. It may be damn near useless in the game, but at least it’s pretty cute and has a fitting name.

144. Tentacool
1-tentacool

I went back and forth on whether Tentacool’s name was good or not, and I decided against it. The “tenta” part doesn’t even make sense, and it definitely isn’t a cool Pokemon. It’s a weak Water/Poison type.

143. Persian
1-persian

Persian is the lame evolution of the far more popular Meowth, and I can’t say that I’ve ever even owned one in a single playthrough. It at least gets some credit for being one of the favorites of Giovanni, the Team Rocket leader.

142. Seaking
1-seaking

The slow-witted looking evolution of Goldeen, the design of Seaking really just adds some spots and a few pounds. Seriously, this is one fat looking fish. Hardly what you’d expect from a Pokemon with “king” in its name.

141. Venonat
1-venonat

For being the combination of several different horrifying bugs, Venonat is actually kind of cute. But he’s useless in game and didn’t really factor into the anime or the card collecting game.
